Your Music

The Indiana Fiddle Frolic is an instructional retreat for old time music with an emphasis on jamming and playing by ear.

To make sure you have the best possible experience, please tell us about you and the music you make.

I have the most experience playing:

The skill level that best describes me on this instrument is

BEGINNER: I can tune it and play 5+ tunes slowly by myself.

ADVANCED BEGINNER: I can play 10+ tunes slowly or at a moderate tempo by myself.

EARLY INTERMEDIATE: I have a small collection of tunes I like to play and I can play them at a moderate tempo.

INTERMEDIATE: I have a growing collection of tunes I like to play at a moderate-to-fast tempo and I'm able to do some left and right hand techniques specific to my instrument like slides, pull-offs, alternate-string pull-offs, hammer-ons, bow-rocking, or walk-ups.

EARLY ADVANCED: I have long lists of tunes that I like to play up to speed, and I easily incorporate techniques and ornamentation as I play.

ADVANCED: I have extensive lists of tunes from a variety of sources and regions. I can play at any tempo. My techniques and ornamentation are part of who I am as a player.

The skill level that best describes me when it comes to playing with others on my instrument is

JAM NEWBIE: I haven't played with other people.

BEGINNER: I have jammed 1-3 times. If they play a tune I know, I can sort of play along. But most of the time at the jams, I felt lost.

ADVANCED BEGINNER: I've jammed 4-7 times and I like when they play the tunes I know. When they play tunes I don't know, I have ways that I get through them, but it's not very comfortable.

EARLY INTERMEDIATE: I'm familiar with enough tunes that I can kinda play along when I hear them, even if I can't play them by myself. I know and use 1-2 strategies for following along when playing tunes I don't know.

INTERMEDIATE: I'm familiar with a good amount of tunes and I can catch the basic melody of a new tune. I have several strategies to help me follow along with new tunes successfully. I could probably even lead a tune or two in a small jam, if I had to.

EARLY ADVANCED: Playing new tunes in a jam is fun for me because I have experience jamming and have heard a lot of tunes. I can pick up the melody of most new tunes. I could lead a jam.

ADVANCED: I love playing and learning new tunes in jams and can pick them up easily. I have led tunes in jams and I enjoy it! Bring on the crooked tunes and all the niche regional material; I'm up for anything!
